Chipsets · Profile Capacity · 5G Support · Regional Variants
This index covers eSIM hardware capabilities across major device families. We analyze not just whether a device supports eSIM, but the underlying chipset, profile storage capacity, and known regional limitations that affect real-world usability for travelers.
Apple's eSIM implementation is widely considered the most polished in the industry. The company uses its own T-series secure enclave for eSIM operations, deeply integrated with iOS. From iPhone 14 onward (US models), Apple removed the physical SIM tray entirely, making eSIM the only connectivity option — a bold move that has accelerated eSIM adoption globally.
| MODEL | MODEM | PROFILES | 5G | NANO SIM |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 16 / 16 Pro | Apple C1 | 8 active | SA/NSA | Non-US only |
| iPhone 15 series | Qualcomm X70 | 8 active | SA/NSA | Non-US only |
| iPhone 14 series | Qualcomm X65 | 8 active | NSA | Non-US only |
| iPhone 13 series | Qualcomm X60 | 2 active | NSA | Yes |
| iPhone XS / XR | Intel PMB9955 | 1 active | No | Yes |
Samsung uses Qualcomm Snapdragon modems in its flagship devices (outside South Korea, where Exynos is used). The Snapdragon X-series modems have excellent eSIM support. Key caveat: Samsung devices sold through certain carriers may have eSIM functionality disabled at the firmware level — always verify before purchase if eSIM is a priority.
| MODEL | CHIPSET | ESIM | NOTES |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S24 Ultra | Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 | YES | Dual SIM + eSIM |
| Galaxy Z Fold 6 | Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 | YES | eSIM + nano SIM |
| Galaxy S23 series | Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 | YES | Check carrier variant |
| Galaxy A54 5G | Exynos 1380 | PARTIAL | EU models only |
Google's Tensor chipsets include dedicated eSIM management hardware. Pixel devices are generally considered the most reliable Android eSIM experience, with clean software implementation and consistent behavior across OS updates. The Pixel 3 was one of the first Android devices to support eSIM in 2018.
eSIM adoption among non-Apple/Samsung/Google manufacturers is growing but remains inconsistent. Regional variants are a significant complication — the same model may support eSIM in Europe but not in Asia or the Americas.
